Jim Mason launches his Campaign for Council Re-election

On Monday evening (31/8/2020) due to the restrictions associated with COVID- 19 more than 50 people gathered on line around the Bellarine to be part of the Jim Mason’s zoom launch of his campaign for re-election to council. Thanks to an expert Host the meeting went off without a hitch.

The meeting opened with an Acknowledgement of Country and Jim explained he was energized and ready for the next four years if he is lucky enough to be re-elected.

Jim Mason thanked various people for their assistance with activities such as erecting signs, handing out leaflets and general advice on campaign matters. He outlined some of his achievements of the past three years. Jim explained that he has worked to achieve funding for many community projects across the Bellarine. He stated that the full list was available on his web site. He reminded the audience he had taken a stand on the need for urgent action on climate change, and the need for council to support social housing projects.

Jim Mason has been Chair or Deputy Chair of five portfolios and on many Committees and Chaired both the Rural and Peri Urban and the Heritage Advisory Committees. He emphasized that he had a very high attendance record for all council committees and activities. Being a Councillor has been a full time job for him.

Jim explained that his time on Council had not always been easy and that to his great disappointment he was not able to gain council majority support to declare a climate emergency or stop the council proposing that it should waste $2million dollars by changing the design and intent of low traffic volumes and increased livability of the Malop Street Green Spine.

Looking to his second term Jim Mason said he would be advocating for a COVID Recovery Plan that focused on the most vulnerable; from small business to those out of work. He said he would continue to make social equity, sustainability and the environment his priority areas. He would argue for fewer Poker Machines whenever he could. He understood the importance of funding Community Facilities and the need for integrity in Council. Jim Mason’s position on all matters would be governed by his consultations with rate payers, the evidence, the science and recognized best practice.

Jim was pleased to be able to say that he had received support from a wide range of community members including local members of parliament.

In conclusion Jim Mason emphasized that a full outline of his achievements and his policies moving forward are available on his web site.
